Benjamin Franklin founded the American Philosophical Society in 1743 in Philadelphia, patterning it after the Royal Society of London. It's purpose was the promotion of the study of science and the practical arts of agriculture, engineering trades, and manufactures. Biographical note: Henry Phillips was an author, philologist, and numismatist. He was born in Philadelphia in 1838 and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1859. Although he was admitted to the Philadelphia Bar in 1859, Phillips devoted most of his life to researches and writings in the fields of philology, numismatics, and folklore.
